What is Pump and Roll?

When using pump and roll, the driver of the Striker Volterra ARFF is able to continuously use the truck's water pump while also keeping the vehicle in motion. Pump and roll allows the Striker Volterra ARFF to engage in the firefighting without needing to be parked. This ensures a faster and more effective response to an aircraft fire.

Why is Pump and Roll Critical for ARFF Crews?

Pump and roll is essential for Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF) crews as it enables a fast response during airport emergencies, which is crucial for protecting passengers and cargo. By allowing fire crews to dispense water and foam while approaching the scene, pump and roll significantly reduces the time it takes to secure the area and save lives.

Is Pump and Roll a Requirement for ARFF Vehicles?

Yes, pump and roll is required on all ARFF vehicles. This functionality ensures fire crews can effectively respond to airport emergencies by providing continuous fire suppression while the vehicle is in motion.

Have ARFF Trucks Always Been Equipped with Pump and Roll Functions?

Pump and roll capabilities have been a standard feature on Oshkosh Airport Products' ARFF trucks since their development. This important function ensures these vehicles can effectively and efficiently tackle fires in critical airport situations.

What is the Oshkosh® Power Divider?

The Oshkosh power divider is a component designed and manufactured by Oshkosh to meet NFPA 414 Pump and Roll requirements. It allows the driver to engage the water pump at any time and at any speed. The Oshkosh power divider is used on 4x4 and 6x6 ARFF trucks. Oshkosh designs and builds its power divider in-house, ensuring the Striker Volterra ARFF truck benefits from the same proven technology as its conventionally powered counterparts.

When Pump and Roll is Engaged, What Fire Suppression Agents Can Be Deployed?

Pump and roll allows for the deployment of water, foam and other customer-specified auxiliary agents, including dry chemical and clean agent. Dry chemical can be discharged from a hydrochem turret nozzle or a Snozzle® high-reach extendable turret (HRET), providing versatile fire suppression options. When operating dry chem discharge however, the vehicle must be stopped in order to operate the handline.

Is There Anything Different About the Pump and Roll Features of the Striker Volterra ARFF Truck?

From an operator training perspective, the Striker Volterra ARFF truck's pump and roll functionality is identical to other ARFF vehicles. However, Striker Volterra ARFF technology offers additional benefits such as reduced fuel consumption, lower emissions and decreased noise while the vehicle is pumping.

Can Pump and Roll Operate Using the Striker Volterra ARFF Battery, or is the Diesel Engine Engaged When It's in Use?

When pump and roll is in use, the diesel engine automatically starts to support the pumping operations, ensuring fire crews have the necessary power to tackle fires effectively.

Does Pump and Roll Work Similarly Between Municipal Fire Trucks and the Striker Volterra ARFF Truck?

Pump and roll functionality differs between municipal and ARFF applications. ARFF vehicles are equipped with higher capacity pumps compared to their municipal counterparts. ARFF pump and roll requirements demand full pump discharge capabilities while driving in both forward and reverse, without disrupting discharge capabilities.

What Sets Oshkosh Airport Products' ARFF Vehicles Apart in Pump and Roll Operations?

A key aspect distinguishing Oshkosh ARFF vehicles in pump and roll operations is their ability to engage the pump without slowing down. This exceptional performance is made possible by the robust power divider design and the innovative Command Zone™ control system, which are consistent across all ARFF variants. By highlighting these superior capabilities, we aim to showcase the advanced technology and commitment to excellence Oshkosh ARFF vehicles bring to the field of airport firefighting.
